Volunteering at Common Ground is a wonderful way to donate your time and show you care about the community in which you live. See below for opportunities to make a contribution. We also accept creative ideas about how you can be of assistance.

Resource & Crisis  Helpline, Crisis Chat and Text Program 

Our 24-hour crisis line (1.800.231.1127) receives more than 45,000 calls annually representing a variety of crisis situations including: suicide, victimization, relationship problems, substance abuse, domestic violence, financial problems, and mental illness. Crisis line volunteers, 18-years or older, counsel callers and provide information and referrals from a database of more than 4,500 sources.

Our Crisis Chat and Text programs provide an outlet for local teens to talk anonymously and confidentially with a peer about issues they are facing. The line (1.800.231.1127) is available seven days per week, 24 hours per day. The Crisis Chat line number is also 1.800.231.1127 and is available weekdays, 4-10p.m.  Volunteers counsel callers and provide information and referrals from a database of more than 4,500 sources.

For  the Resource & Crisis Helpine, Crisis Chat and Text programs, volunteers receive more than 70-hours of professional training to prepare them for crisis calls. The training program, offered three times a year, includes in-depth sessions on domestic violence, sexual assault, mental illness, suicide, substance abuse, codependency and youth issues, as well as communication skills.

Once trained, volunteers are asked to work one weekly four-hour shift. For more information, prospective volunteers should attend a Volunteer Orientation, held the first Wednesday of every month from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the Resource and Crisis Center, located at 1200 N. Youth Residential Programs

Volunteers, 18-years or older, are needed in two of our youth residential programs to interact with residents, handle walk-ins, intakes, assist with group counseling, information requests, crisis calls and provide other assistance as needed.

Volunteers receive more than 15-hours of professional training to prepare them for work with the young people. The training program is offered three times a year. Once trained, volunteers are asked to work one weekly five-hour shift.  If you are interested in helping please complete and submit the volunteer application.

Legal Clinic

Our Legal Clinic provides free consultations and informed recommendations without representation by volunteer licensed attorneys. Clinic hours are Tuesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. at our administrative office (1410 S. Telegraph Rd., Bloomfield Hills) and Thursdays from 11am-12:30pmat the Oakland County Law and Research Library (1200 N. Telegraph Rd. West Wing Extension, 2nd floor, Pontiac).  The clinic is based on availability of volunteer attorneys and based on needs, not necessarily on a first-come, first-served basis.

Attorneys who wish to volunteer their services are asked to participate in the clinic once every four to six weeks.

Birmingham Street Art Fair

Common Ground's largest fundraiser takes place each September in downtown Birmingham. The specific date will be announced later.The fine art event features juried work by more than 190 artists, food, entertainment and a silent auction. During the weekend of the fair, many volunteers are needed to help bring this popular, annual event to life. If you are interested in helping please complete and submit the volunteer application.
