Did you know...that 1 in 4 Americans live with a diagnosable mental health condition?

FACT: One in four adult Americans live with a diagnosable mental health condition.

While mental health and substance use conditions are common, they are extremely treatable and individuals go on to recover and lead full and productive lives. May is Mental Health Month and Common Ground is helping to spread the word about mental health and how important it is to overall health.

One sad fact is many people living with a mental health condition–as high as 50 percent– never seek or receive help due to stigma, lack of information, cost or lack of health insurance coverage. Many people may be reluctant to ask for help or don’t know where to find it. But there are many community and national resources that can help people find support and treatment and Common Ground is one of those community resources.

The passage of the federal mental health parity and addiction equity act also expands access to care. That law, which applies to groups of more than 50 employees, doesn’t require coverage for mental health and substance use conditions. But if coverage is provided, it must be on a par with coverage for other medical conditions. Higher deductibles, steeper co-pays and other restrictions are no longer allowed for mental health and substance abuse treatment.

It’s important that more people have access to treatment and services because there is a great deal of knowledge about how to identify and even prevent mental health conditions. And there are tested tools available that can help every person face difficult times and challenges and improve their resiliency. Call us at 1-800-231-1127 if you or someone you know needs help getting through a difficult time.

Two trusted organizations come together to offer special training to the community.

The stigma surrounding mental illness often prevents people from seeking help or even acknowledging that they need help. When they do want help, they don’t know where to turn. Common Ground and the Beaumont Health System have teamed up to sponsor Mental Health First Aid, a special training designed to equip lay-people (non-mental health professionals) with the tools to recognize and respond to people who may be in a mental health crisis and connect them to the appropriate care.

“Too often people who are living with mental illness are afraid to say anything because of the stigma associated with it,” explained Jim Perlaki, vice president of External Relations at Common Ground. “This training will help to de-stigmatize mental illness and having people trained with these skills will make for a healthier community, because more people will get connected with the right resources when they need them.”

Mental Health First Aid training participants will learn how to provide the initial help to someone showing symptoms of mental illness or in a mental health crisis (severe depression, psychosis, panic attack, suicidal thoughts and behaviors) until appropriate professional help can be engaged.

The class is open to educators, school administrators, human resource professionals, the faith communities, policy makers, primary health care providers, first responders, police and fire personnel, security personnel, family members or caring community members.

Become a life saver! Pick a class date and time that works for you. Click here to view the flyer, which includes fee, registration information and the complete class schedule.

The next Mental Health First Aid Training session, to take place at Beaumont Hospital in Troy (44201 Dequindre Rd. Troy, ground floor, classroom #5) Mondays, May 14 and 21 from 8:30am until 5:00pm each day. The $75 fee includes registration, workbook, snacks and lunch.
