Oakland County Homeless Students Struggle During Pandemic

In Michigan’s wealthiest county, there are more than 2,000 homeless students representing all 28 public school districts.

Although many Oakland County students were able to retreat to the comfort of their wifi-enabled homes during the pandemic as schools transitioned to online learning, thousands of their classmates had another critical issue to ponder as cases and deaths began to rise.

They had nowhere to call home, which presented an even greater challenge to adapting to the ever-changing pandemic fallout.

The number of homeless Oakland County students varies from year to year, ranging from 1,973 students for the 2017-2018 academic year to 2,173 students for the 2019-2020 academic year, the most recent data for which the Michigan Center for Educational Performance and Information (CEPI) has available.
