Crains Detroit: “Common Ground to launch behavioral health urgent care program, site”

“There are urgent care locations around every corner in Metro Detroit for those with physical health issues.
But people with mental health and substance use issues have only hospital emergency rooms to turn to when they can’t get in to see their doctor, run out of medication and/or face other issues.

Common Ground is looking to change that with a new behavioral health urgent care program.

The Pontiac-based nonprofit on Tuesday morning is set to announce $1.2 million campaign to fund startup costs for the program to give those with lower acuity issues such as depression, anxiety or substance use an alternative to visiting hospital emergency rooms or going it alone.

“We’re trying to give alternatives to the ER before things get so bad that it becomes a life or death situation for folks,” Common Ground President and CEO Heather Rae said.”That’s the sweet spot for these urgent cares.”

“What we’re seeing now is (for) people who can’t get into their doctor to renew their prescription and have gone a couple of days without meds, things are starting to get worse,” she said.”
